Town Right-of-Way

In Vermont, Towns have a highway right-of-way (ROW) in order to keep up with maintenance like ditching, sign posting, and roadside mowing. The ROW is roughly 25 feet to each side of the centerline. This often extends over the edge of the road and on to the land on either side.

Residents, as you plan your roadside landscaping, please keep the ROW and the future growth of your plants in mind. If in doubt, give yourself plenty of distance. Despite our crew’s best efforts, its possible that plantings within in the ROW may be damaged during necessary maintenance.

Public utilities and construction crews, please be sure you have the appropriate Right-of-Way permits in place before beginning your work. Below, you'll find links to Shoreham's ROW Permit and the ROW Work Notification form (for valid permit holders). ROW Permit applications can be submitted to the Zoning Administrator (shorehamzoning@gmail.com), and ROW Notifications forms can be submitted to the Town Office (shorehamtown@shorehamvt.us) and the Road Foreman (roads@shorehamvt.us).
