Towns have been advised by the Vermont Secretary of State's office that voter data will NOT be shared with the federal government, pursuant to statute:

A public agency as defined in 1 V.S.A. § 317 and any officer, employee, agent, or independent contractor of a public agency shall not knowingly disclose a copy of all of the statewide voter checklist, a municipality’s portion of the statewide voter checklist, or any other municipal voter checklist to any foreign government or to a federal agency or commission or to a person acting on behalf of a foreign government or of such a federal entity for the purpose of:

(A) registration of a voter based on his or her information maintained in the checklist;

(B) publicly disclosing a voter’s information maintained in the checklist; or

(C) comparing a voter’s information maintained in the checklist to personally identifying information contained in other federal or state databases.  (17 V.S.A. § 2154(b)(2))

[Posted April 1, 2025.]

As with all election-related legislation and policy, our office has been in communication with Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas and her team regarding President Trump’s March 25 Executive Order on the ‘Integrity of American Elections’ and what it means for elections in our town. The Secretary’s office is monitoring developments, but at this point the Executive Order opens a lot of questions and doesn’t provide clear answers.

Therefore, we have been advised to not make any changes to voting processes or election administration at this time.

You can read the Secretary of State’s response to the Executive Order here. We expect to receive updates from the Secretary’s office and will continue to keep you informed.
